COMMOTION OF THE BIRDS

We’re moving right along through the seventeenth century.

The latter part is fine, much more modern

than the earlier part. Now we have a Restoration Comedy.

Webster and Shakespeare and Corneille were fine

for their time but not modern enough,

though an improvement over the sixteenth century

of Henry VIII, Lassus and Petrus Christus, who, paradoxically,

seem more modern than their immediate successors,

Tyndale, Moroni, and Luca Marenzio among them.

Often it’s a question of seeming rather than being modern.

Seeming is almost as good as being, sometimes,

and occasionally just as good. Whether it can ever be better

is a question best left to philosophers

and others their ilk, who know things

in a way others cannot, even though the things

are often almost the same as the things we know.

We know, for instance, how Carissimi influenced Charpentier,

measured propositions with a loop at the end of them

that brings things back to the beginning, only a little

higher up. The loop is Italian,

imported to the court of France and first despised,

then accepted without any acknowledgement of where

it came from, as the French are wont to do.

It may be that some recognize it

in its new guise-that can be put off

till another century, when historians

will claim it all happened normally, as a result of history.

(The baroque has a way of tumbling out at us

when we thought it had been safely stowed away.

The classical ignores it, or doesn’t mind too much.

It has other things on its mind, of lesser import,

it turns out.) Still, we are right to grow with it,

looking forward impatiently to modernism, when

everything will work out for the better, somehow.

Until then it’s better to indulge our tastes

in whatever feels right for them: this shoe,

that strap, will come to seem useful one day

when modernism’s thoughtful presence is installed

all around, like the remnants of a construction project.

It’s good to be modern if you can stand it.

It’s like being left out in the rain, and coming

to understand that you were always this way: modern,

wet, abandoned, though with that special intuition

that makes you realize you weren’t meant to be

somebody else, for whom the makers

of modernism will stand inspection

even as they wither and fade in today’s glare.

THE UPRIGHT PIANO

Did we once go to bed together?

And how was it? I need your help on this one.

Good thing it happened, too-

Intelligence without understanding

is like constant front, pounding at the temples

until its bargain is overseen. I kid you not.

We “bought into” the ephebe-consciousness scam

that razed our era, and the next one.

What was it about those boys? Some were plain,

others smooth. All enjoyed the sun

for as long as it chose to shine upon them.

But there were texts to be looked to, dark as forests

when the sun shines in central summer.

Nobody did the escaping this time.

Work with your hands a little bit.

You might want to convert yourself

on a scholarship. I’m hoping to live with him.

I can’t tell if it’s possible. The blood-presence drives

to sleep longer on the couch, as the fair one pines.

Oh averages! It was your story that brought us down,

at the first posts, under green leaves.

Your logic I forswore, even as its wave reached out toward me.

Hard lines. Besides, it’s poor form. (Pure form?)

Somebody left their toothbrush on the dance floor.

My understanding, cool from the diagnosis,

is they don’t want it to be there.

You mean you’re suffering like everybody?

That, and a few more kicks to the groin, means we’re finished here.

O idle light! How polished you were at first!

If things darkened afterward, that was no one’s fault

except the self-appointed guardians of our civility’s,

who nattered on, dense with the realizing it.

We knew it before. So many flowers washed up on the beach

it was pure chaos, or fun. Now it’s time to pay.

STRENGERS MAY KISS

It wouldn’t be the first time (either),

curvaceous, some of the art work

keeps spilling, and so on.

Don’t say anything.

(You always need to get somewhere,

civil engine,

some more dumb bunny cheesecake.)

Thanks for having me

slipshod and enjoy

his undistinguished underwear.

Literary schools and manners

was not mistaken about his

it got that way just at the end

not after eleven o’clock at night,

chubby accent.

Fact: I’m tempted to sort of slither in its path,

all that rot.

Where you going to hang it from?

Yes I suppose so and

I want you to get another one of those

from apparent disorder but

but kind of

even drink to this.

You probably won’t see us again.

Is it great being uncomfortable there?

We didn’t call it that.

BUT SERIUSLY

Do not include anger at the distance

it takes to get from here to the hill of downtown

that bears the sapphire tower.

Others than you have made the trip, and found

Little to marvel at once the arriving was over.

Your words hold too much meaning once

they’re released. Save an epigram

for the jar. Once it is lapsed

you’ll wear it like an endorsement,

jewel that goes nowhere.

All along the creek where we once stood

new ball games are being absorbed

and declassified. Does that matter to us?

Or is it already time to go back in?

On the Waterfront was a good movie. Can we leave it at that?

Necesito me ayudes a recordarlo.

No estoy bromeando.

"Caímos" en la trampa de la efebo-conciencia

que arruinó nuestra era y la siguiente.

¿Qué de especial tenían esos chavalos? Muchos eran sencillos

(¿Forma pura?)

No digás nada.

(Siempre necesitás llegar a un punto,

maquina civilizada,

y desclasificados. ¿Acaso eso nos importa?

¿O ya es hora de volver?

On the Waterfront fue una buena película. ¿Lo dejamos así?
